South park came away empty handed after a hard fought game at league leaders Lewes as the home side ran out 3-1 winners.

Lewes started brightly and were in front in just the 6th minute as Medlock converted Conlon’s cross form the left. Mazzone’s cross to Smith was intercepted by Wilson. Hammond fired over the bar from 25 yards and Elliott at full stretch cleared a dangerous Lewes attack. McElligott’s cross from the right skipped off the turf to Elliott however the Park defender was unable to react in time to guide his shot into the net. Thomas was off his line quickly to block a shot from Lawson and then the Park keeper kept out a long range effort form Redwood. Lawson shot into the side netting whilst at the other end Lavery’s shot was blocked by Wilson. Park levelled the scores on the stroke of half time when Lavery’s through ball found Mazzone and his shot beat Winterton in the Lewes goal to nestle in the far corner of the net.

In the opening stages of the second half Hammond’s free kick was deflected behind for a corner from which Brinkhurst shot over the bar from 8 yards. Winterton could only parry Mazzone’s shot from the edge of the box however he reacted quickly to deny Lavery. Moments after coming on as substitute Jonte Smith scored his customary goal against South Park. An early ball form the left from Coppola found Smith in space at the far post to put the home side in front for the second time. Moments later Thomas made an outstanding save to deny Medlock and then blocked his follow up effort. Merchant’s shot on the turn flew over the bar as Park looked for an equaliser. Pullin’s volley from a left wing corner was blocked and Windsor shot over the bar from 20 yards. In the final minute of stoppage time Park won a corner which saw Thomas come up as Park threw everyone forward. However the corner was eventually scrambled clear and the ball fell to Sow who moved into the park half and his shot from 45 yards just trickled over the line to seal the win for Lewes.

Park’s New Years Day game against Carshalton Athletic was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Park travel to Molesey on Saturday before entertaining Shoreham at Whitehall Lane on Tuesday 9th January.
